Any program promising better health is only as good as the work you put into it, but Ultraprevention authors Mark Liponis and Mark Hyman, co-directors of medicine at Canyon Ranch, have designed their program so that not everyone must follow every little detail to the letter. Their six-week program is divided into three stages, but you can decide which suggestions will help speed you towards your goals. Over the past few years, I have experienced health issues. I went to several doctors and still felt lousy. I found this book to be very eye-opening. I now realize that many of my habits were making me sick. The first part of the book is filled with facts and anecdotal information about health conditions and causes. It gave me the tools to take responsibility for my health. The second part of the book provides more step by step information on how to make changes and remove toxic elements like stress and poor diet from your life. I have been on the program for over a month and I am noticing improvement in my overall well-being. The best part of the book is that I feel more in control of my health.

This is an amazing jumping off point those folks living an average American life consuming a typical American diet w/ unhealthy oils, fried food, packaged snacks, soda, coffee etc. - it will motivate you to cut all of the stuff out of your diet by helping you actually understand why those things are all terrible for you. Going to the supermarket with an informed understanding of how what you put in your cart affects everything in your life will make it really really easy to start making the right choices.

I am an endurance athlete and this book served as a great start to understanding how to better use my diet as a way to improve performance. I can't wait to dig deeper on more specific nutrition for athletes and I think this book was a great background for that.

The first in the Ultra-series of books, _Ultra-Prevention_ models a refreshing approach to wellness which focuses on proactively pursuing wellness vs. reactively fighting illness. This health-centric plan (best summarized by the authors' urging that "You don't have to wait until you are sick to get well.") exposes the five "forces of illness" underlying the majority of disease: malnutrition, impaired metabolism, inflammation, impaired detoxification, and oxidative stress. In contrast to the standard diagnose-and-medicate medical model which revolves around smothering the smoke (i.e., acute symptom relief), the _Ultra-Prevention_ approach targets the sources of the fire. A great first step towards understanding and implementing a life-long plan for optimal health, _Ultra-Prevention_ is an ultra-essential read for those seeking to maximize the overlap between life-span and health-span.
