About Therm-a-Rest
In 1971, Seattle aerospace giant Boeing announced the largest layoff in company history, resulting in 50,000 people losing their jobs. Among the jobless were Jim Lea and Neil Anderson, both engineers who were eager to get back to work. Turning to friend John Burroughs--an avid mountain climber--for ideas, Burroughs suggested a better sleeping mattress, specifically one that was lightweight, warm, and comfortable. Taking their inspiration from gardening cushions that expelled air as the gardener shifted his or her weight, the duo took a piece of open-cell foam and sandwiched it between two pieces of airtight fabric. Using an old sandwich maker, they melted the fabric onto the foam, creating a bond that was perfectly airtight. After adding a valve, their prototype was ready to test. Within two years, Lea and Anderson had partnered with Burroughs to begin production of Therm-a-Rest pads, the world's first self-inflating mattress. Under the name Cascade Designs, the private, family-owned company has grown into one of the most respected outdoor manufacturers in the world. Still based in Seattle, Cascade Designs sticks to the same fundamental principles it was founded upon: providing relevant and innovative products, exceptional quality, and service that exceeds your expectations.

"I agree not worth it. Better out there." 2009-10-25
By L. Payne
I bought the Thermarest based on the reviews. I thought the extra money spent would be gaining me the comfort over the Pad I was currently using and complaining about. Wrong. It is a bit better but not like the reviews led me to believe. Yes you may not feel the rock under you but it still feels like you are sleeping on the ground with a pad IMO. I have used it 5 times now on scout outings and having switched around with other leaders in trying to find the best Pad, this one didn't rank up there.

 "Couldn't be happier" 2009-07-30
By Alisha Watson
Got tired of sleeping on a lumpy mattress and thought I'd try this. It's sad when sleeping on the floor is more comfortable than sleeping in a bed, but this mattress delivers! Slept on it for over a month, now, and love it! Can finally sleep the night through. Haven't tried it out camping, but I'm sure it will be just fine, when I do. Wouldn't trade it for the world!

 "Not worth the money" 2009-06-22
By Jean Fortier (Chichester, NH United States)
I bought this pad hoping it would be more comfortable than pads I had purchased at a local sporting goods store. Not only is it less comforable than the coleman pad I used last year it is not 2 inches thick as the ad claims. 1 inch maybe. Not worth the price.

 "Worth every penny" 2008-07-16
By Jackie Newman (Pennsylvania)
My husband is new to camping. He bought a cheap pad for the first camping trip and said it was worthless. I got him this for Father's Day and he used it at Cub Scout residence camp last week. He said it was worth every penny! I tried it in the house and thought it was quite comfy. Even on my side on a bare floor, I didn't hit bottom. It really provides good support with minimal thickness.

It will be handy for kid sleep-overs in coming years and is easily stored behind our couch with the valves open. (Don't store these rolled up for the long term.) I'd buy this over a sleeper sofa for occasional overnight guests.

"As good or better than your bed at home!" 2007-07-11
By David Nathanson (Southern Calif, United States)
This is my 2md Thermarest mattress. I got about 20 years of great service out of the first one. It held air fine until I left it fully inflated in a closed trailer for a few hot summer weeks & the air expanded until it leaked. My fault. I learned to leave the valve open when storing. Or just roll it up when not in use. I really can't complain about it.

So I bought another. This is the most comfortable camping mattress I have ever used. My back really loves it! Washable. Also it is ridiculously tough! In my college days I camped many times on sharp rocks or even broken glass, but the Thermarest air mat never had a problem with that.

These things are so great because they almost inflate themselves! When you are making camp, just unroll the Thermarest & leave it with the air valve open. Go do a few things & come back & give it a couple of puffs & close the valve. All done! Really easy! Just remember not to store it fully inflated in a hot place with the valve shut!

You can also get a Thermarest strap kit to join 2 of these mats so you & your honey won't keep falling into the space between.
