A hidden epidemic races around the globe -- we can't see it or touch it, which makes it so dangerous.

The invisible epidemic has led to the suffering of millions who spend billions on drugs, only to find they don't work.

This is an epidemic of broken brains.

"Broken brains" go by many names -- depression, anxiety, memory loss, brain fog, attention deficit disorder, autism, and dementia, to name a few -- and show up in radically different ways from person to person, making each seem like a separate problem.

But the truth is that these "diagnoses" are all the result of a few basic problems with our biology. Pinpoint these biological problems, fix them, and let your body's natural healing intelligence take over to repair your brain. Now you can experience an UltraMind -- one that is highly focused and able to pay attention at will, with a strong, reliable memory and a mood that is calm, confident, in control, and in good spirits.

We have all heard of the mind-body connection or how our thoughts affect the health of our body. But the reverse is far more powerful: what you do to your body, your basic biology, has a profound effect on your brain.

Have you ever experienced instant clarity after exercise? Alertness after drinking coffee? A mental crash after popping candy? Does your brain inexplicably slow down during stress, while multitasking, or when meeting a deadline? Each is an example of how what we do to our bodies -- whether through nutrition, sleep, exercise, or stress -- has a dramatic effect on our brains.

Conventional treatments don't help, or provide only slight benefit, because they just manage symptoms rather than deal with -- and heal -- the underlying problem. And just as brain problems all stem from the same root causes, they all have the same solution -- The UltraMind Solution.

Our ancient genes interact with our environment to create systemic imbalances that affect our brains. Correct those imbalances -- most caused by nutritional deficiencies, allergens, infections, toxins, and stress -- and you can achieve optimum mental health without drugs or psychotherapy.

The UltraMind Solution is the future of medicine, the culmination of the last twenty years of research on what makes the brain happy, focused, and calm; research that has uncovered a few simple factors that explain why things go wrong and how to fix them.

Don't wait for this revolution in medicine to trickle into your doctor's office: it usually takes research twenty years to move from the lab to the patient. The answers are here, right now, in The UltraMind Solution.

"Really quite good, if you can afford the supplements & treatment" 2010-08-28
By Mysterious Microburst (Mohave County, AZ)
I purchased my copy of this book in a grocery store. Food is something I've paid attention to for quite some time; supplements as well: acquaintances have gone mad waiting for me to read the labels on various packages. It's not quite fair to tar all products with the same brush: "if it comes in a box, avoid it." And much as I'd love to have the resources to afford central air and solar panels, these are not within my means: I live with an aging swamp cooler and a few small fans in a poorly insulated mobile home in the desert SW..and there are people who have it much worse than I do. The notion of heating up an oven or even a crock pot when average daily high is 104 with humidity at around 30%, much as I understand the downside of using a microwave oven, the upside is that the space indoors remains a tolerable 10 to 15 degrees cooler.

It is agreed and understood that many people diagnosed with some form of ASD may well be allergic to something commonplace in our Western "Civilized" diet, some of the supplements and treatments recommended are, umm... a bit spendy. As for 'raw foods', I'm a bit cautious on this subject having had a rather unpleasant reaction when an enthusiast decided to take me under his wing and show me the path of proper eating and began to wonder if this man had stock in Depends. I am a vegetarian, not a strict Vegan and believe certain fruits, vegetable and fungi really do require cooking -- or at least a thorough decontamination (I spray veggies & fruits with white vinegar and wipe them prior to washing ~ and fungi is cooked, regardless of what media it is grown in/on).

"Smart Foods" and "Smart Drugs" (sometimes referred to as 'supplements') are wonderful. But, if like many Americans you find you are under-employed or unemployed, your insurance is unlikely to cover such luxuries as OTC herbal remedies. So you must do the research to find the instances where supplements have made it into the 'unscheduled but available by prescription only in the US' category and your provider covers most or all of the cost. Then there's the small problem of finding a Doctor who is willing to turn away from the enticements offered by pharmaceutical companies and take the time to work with you as a whole human being..not so easy when the majority of Primary Care Physicians are turning their backs on State or Federally-funded insurance programs notorious for making physicians jump through flaming hoops to get approval for something as commonplace as 'Physical Therapy'... forget non-traditional therapies like Acupuncture and Biofeedback and coverage for Tens units and chelation (for the latter, becoming a member of certain religious groups might be useful).

People who are relying on a monthly allotment of food stamps will find most health food stores do not take EBT. And what's for sale in the health food aisle costs two to three times the comparable "healthy commercial" equivalent (meaning: does not contain High Fructose Corn Syrup, Aspartame, dyes, gluten, lactose, ad infinitum). Quite simply, people sometimes cannot afford to eat right -- and some fast ten out of thirty days because they can't stretch the budget to allow themselves to eat whole, pure foods every day. And in a high desert area of the SW, coercing a garden to survive the extremes of heat, cold and punishing winds is not easily accomplished without a few hundred dollars -- even using cuttings and scavenging recycled materials. There are other sentient creatures who compete for whatever food sources they can scrounge in a wasteland ~ and I'll not be injuring and poisoning cottontail rabbits and ground squirrels and cactus wrens because they're munching on some part of the crop.

I fully agree many Westerners are taking medications that they'd otherwise not need if they could simply eat the perfect diet, not be subjected to many dozens of vaccinations very early in life, be tested and have all allergies identified and receive the treatments they so desperately need to remove "bad bacteria" from their GI tract and Candida from their bloodstream. Anxiety, OCD, Attention Deficit, Dementia... so many of these modern epidemics are caused, exacerbated or perpetuated by inadequate and imbalanced diet, outrageous vaccination schedules, unidentified allergies, over or under-availability of certain vitamins, minerals, enzymes.

While no single book can address the problems of unethical corporations, lobbying of government officials to 'look the other way', bad health practices and exploitation by Big Pharmacy, I must say: to eat and take supplements and be tested as you are advised to be in this book, you must have either phenomenally great insurance coverage, be independently wealthy, know all the right people or have extraordinary luck. This book appears accurate, the author is truthful and knowledgeable and I recommend people read it to understand what is possible, that there are quite real and viable alternatives to standard medical treatments and indeed, although they believe they are eating 'all the right things', their diet may be entirely inadequate and/or toxic.

It's preferable, before filling a prescription for a medication known to be addictive, to examine all the other paths one can travel to achieve ultimately better results. But, big BUT... can you afford to travel those other paths when you have to function at work and/or school and the Doctor at your HMO doesn't give a rat's @ss about Nootropics, let alone know what they are? You'll get the generic for Zoloft and, if you're lucky, there will be no co-pay required at the pharmacy.

I recommend we, who are being poisoned by Big Drug Companies and made into unwilling test subjects by our own FDA (USDA 'organic'. Ahem.) all collaborate on a book which makes it to the NY Times Best Seller list so we too can afford all the good supplements and uncontaminated foods and treatments which, rather than urging us to take still more pharmaceuticals to control our depression or anxiety. It's time to change a lot more than our diet: it's time to change the system and the world we live in so healthy alternatives and resources that make them available to us are more equally distributed and available to all. This book shows not what is possible, but what really should be the *standard* for how we eat, how we live and the quality of medical care we receive.

 "UltraOverrated" 2010-08-23
By Liz (Texas)
In this book the author takes his rather narrow personal experience of fatigue and depression caused by mercury poisoning contracted while living in China and makes the broad assumption that if you're depressed you probably have mercury poisoning too; if not mercury poisoning then lead poisoning, or flouride in your water, or some other environmental toxin. As if to bolster his case he vaguely throws in some long-disproven theories of aluminum in antiperspirant being linked to Alzheimer's and breast cancer. While he does acknowledge briefly that there are other causes of depression, he then continues the rest of the book as if merucry poisoning is the only cause. Interestingly, as a cure for this he recommends chelation therapy, a controversial and dangerous practice which really has nothing to do with diet.

Like many authors with little information and a lot of pages to fill, he uses the technique of spending several chapters promising you all the wonderful things his 7 steps will do without actually telling you what those 7 steps are.

I did give this two stars because the diet is sound, but it's nothing new, and it's certainly not a cure for depression or anxiety. Limit sugar, eats lots of fruits and vegetables (preferably without added pesticides), keep your grains whole and your proteins lean.

 "Fix Your Brain/Fix Your Body/Fix Life" 2010-07-25
By WILLIAM MCLEAN (Medford, OR USA)
Actually, the subjects covered in this book start to move from pure science to become pseudoscience. Many of the recommendations suggested in "The UltraMind Solution" (and by many other like minded authors) have not been sufficiently tested to be well established as scientific facts: "THIS HAS DEFINITELY BEEN PROVEN" has been brushed aside, in favor of the more honest: "THIS SEEMS TO BE THE CASE."

But neither doctors nor scientists know everything - and they know they don't know everything. That's why research continues to be important. When doctors make out like everything they say is scientifically proven fact, they are not being honest. While great strides have been made in medical science, it is also true that selfish short term profit motives are leading the world down the wrong path. Health problems are starting to increase as treatments are made to target symptoms rather than causes. Dr. Hyman has been very aggressive in criticizing mainstream medical practice. And he explains his position very well. One example: "Depression is not caused by a Prozac deficiency."

Of course we still need doctors. We still need the Pope (maybe). It is just that people must be made to understand that it is not what doctors do that is most important to achieve good mental and physical health, it is primarily what they the people do. Ditto for the Pope (spiritually.) Some things you simply cannot buy.

I believe that if everyone would sincerely try to follow Dr. Hyman recommendations human life expectancy would improve by leaps and bounds. Mental health would become much less of a problem. And other benefits, not even mentioned in the book, would naturally follow. Just imagine all the improvements to the quality of life if people had healthier brains and made better choices. Healthier brains mean more than just healthier bodies.

Dr. Hyman says his method is simple; but following every detail as he suggests is actually very time consuming, impractical, and even impossible for most people. He makes this more obvious by getting readers to sign-on to his website (and perhaps pay more money) to get his special help.

I do recommend this book. At age 71.9, I already do most of the healthy diet thing, and I do a lot more exercise than Dr. Hyman suggests is necessary. So far, I'm in excellent health. Yes, I will gratefully make more improvements based on this book, but I wish to HAVE a life - not just extend it.

"Integrating the Mind and Body" 2010-07-15
By Joseph S. Maresca (Bronxville, New York USA)
The author explains the connections between the
body and the brain including the effects of fear
and anxiety on health. Certain vitamins like B6
and B12 help to balance blood sugar. Glutathione
recycles antioxidants. Vitamins B6 and B12 also
provide a brain tune-up of sorts. Low levels of
zinc are associated with low levels of immunity.

In some patients, gluten triggers an ugly
autoimmune response. Low Vitamin A and Omega 3
may cause the classic bumps on the back of the
arm due to hyperkeratosis polaris.

The book explains 7 steps to a better you. These are:
o optimize nutrition
o balance hormones
o reduce inflammation
o fix digestion
o detoxify
o boost the metabolism
o reduce stress

The author advises us to protect our head all the
time (avoid head injuries). In addition, quality
sleep is critical to overall health. Classic toxins
are explained ; such as, alcohol, tobacco, caffeine,
sugar and gluten (for some who are intolerant) .
Insulin is said to damage the brain.

The C-reactive protein is a measure of inflammation.
Reduced amounts of Vitamins C, D, Zinc, Omega 3
fatty acids and increased stress can have a
harmful effect on our health. Overall, the presentation
is excellent for health buffs everywhere.
